Overview

This course focuses on the practical development and application of knowledge and skills required by anyone wishing to pursue a career in Architecture, Interior or Product design.

The programme is designed to help you to discover and develop your talents, interests and strengths within the spectrum of 3 dimensional design. The course is a nationally recognised qualification and has been designed to develop the breadth of skills and knowledge to allow successful progression to Higher Education, Apprenticeships and into related employment.

We aim to provide you with the necessary experience to develop the underpinning visual and practical skills that are required across the 3D specialist area. Projects will provide you with the opportunity to explore and experiment so that you can develop a clear understanding of the subject and enable you to choose which area of 3D is of greater interest to you.

Details

You will be set projects that allow you to be creative and demonstrate your ability to think, problem solve and communicate your ideas. These are all necessary skills for artists and designers and provide a skill set sought after by both Higher Education institutions and employers.

Throughout the course you will learn about the historical and cultural contexts of art and design, and study the work of other architects and designers. A programme of visiting Artists and Designers working at Hillsborough College will extend your practice and personal development.

In the first 6 weeks of the course you will embed a range of fundamental drawing skills and then as the course progresses the more technical aspects of drawing from isometric to perspective drawing and modelling techniques. It will give you an insight into the type of careers available to you, from taking your study further to train to be an architect, or designing for commercial spaces, to theatre and set design. You will utilise CAD software that will enhance your skill base even further.

There are also opportunities to participate in live briefs, and link with industry. The course has historical links with Sheffield Hallam University and many of our students continue their study there During the second year of the course, the emphasis will be on building up your portfolio in preparation for interview. You will also have the opportunity to write your own self-directed brief within the latter stages of the course, which will showcase the skills you have learned. Your work is then exhibited at the end of year show giving you the opportunity to network and engage with potential employers.

Project briefs are dynamic and responsive to current design trends. This pathway could lead to a career in any of the following areas listed below

•         Interior design

•         Architecture

•         Product design

•         Retail and exhibition (designing for a commercial space)

•         Furniture Design

•         Theatre and Set Design

Work-related experience includes taking part in industry based projects and competitions. You are expected to work independently on project work away from the college at least 6 hours a week.
