About the Course


Level 2 Applied Science at The Sheffield College is an interesting, diverse and stimulating course in which you’ll learn about biology, chemistry, physics and forensic science. You will be taught in modern, well-equipped laboratories by qualified and experienced lecturers. You will also be supported by a Tutorial Mentor and Training and Assessment Facilitator.

You will develop you knowledge and practical skills in Applied Science – this can help you to thrive on future course or in the world of work. Learners who have completed this course usually progress to Level 3 Applied Science and then on to university. The course will give you a chance to improve and broaden your scientific knowledge with units that take a focused looked at Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will explore the environmental effects of human and natural activity related to chemistry and develop skills that underpin applications of chemistry in the manufacturing and service industries.

The knowledge and skills you gain are essential for science technicians working in chemistry-related industries or laboratory services. You will investigate energy transformations, radiation and their applications, and gain knowledge of waves, how electrical energy is transferred for various applications and how our universe has evolved. You will also cover astronomy including theories related to the current solar system model and space exploration.

You will develop knowledge and skills related to fundamental concepts in biology and investigate living organisms, how humans impact on the environment and the factors that affect human health. You will investigate the structure and function of the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems, along with reproductive functions and how collectively these processes work to maintain the human body.

There will be an opportunity to use a variety of scientific processes to analyse evidence gathered from a crime scene, developing understanding of the relationship between forensic science and the law. You will be able to build on existing theories or practical work by conducting a practical science project related to your area of interest.
