About this course

This course introduces you to the dynamic area of art and design. You will learn by completing project briefs based on realistic work-based activities. There will be the opportunity to explore materials and experiment with new techniques.

To assess your skills and interests, you will sample a range of areas including drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D work, ceramics, fashion and textiles. You will also study the work of other artists and designers.

Your course will include tutor-led demonstrations, presentations and regular tutorials to support your studies. Course enrichment activities can include visits to galleries and museums and working on live projects and competitions.

You are expected to work independently on project work away from the college for at least 6 hours a week.

On your programme you will study for Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths qualifications if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade 4.

Students are required to provide their own basic equipment as well as pay a studio fee of approximately £50 towards the cost of materials provided by the college and you are expected to contribute towards the cost of trips and visits. You may be entitled to help with these costs and anything else you need to buy for your course from the college's Learner Support Fund.

Staff and facilities

You will learn from experienced and specialised art and design tutors who will be able to offer advice and support in terms of your studies and future goals.

Classes are delivered in well- resourced art studios and IT rooms as well as specialist workshops for photography, printmaking, ceramics and textiles.
