Overview

About the course

This course will give you an opportunity to develop your creative abilities predominantly in fine arts.

You will also learn by looking at the work of a number of modern and contemporary artists and will gain the confidence to analyse and understand their ideas and techniques and to use this knowledge to develop your own work.

Visits to exhibitions are arranged as part of the course.

To begin with coursework projects are teacher directed but, as the course progresses, you will increasingly become a more independent learner and develop work based on your own interests and ideas.

Although some students like to purchase some of their own materials (particularly for use at home) most materials/equipment are available in College. A Level Art students are asked to pay a £15 studio fee at the start of the year to contribute towards this. You will also need a hard backed A3 sketchbook (approx £12) and to pay for trips/visits (approx £30 for the first year and approx £40 for the second year).

Will this subject suit me?

An ideal student for this course would be one who is willing to experiment with new ideas, materials and techniques and who is really interested, not only in developing their own work but in looking at that of other artists.

Personal study time

A Level students are expected to devote as much time outside the classroom to their studies as in lessons. Homework will be set regularly, but students are expected to undertake self-directed research as well.

What students say about this subject.

There is an amazing atmosphere within the Art room and the teachers make it a pleasure to learn. There is a lot of work to be done, but if you keep on top of it, it will be reflected in your final grade.

Very hard work but teachers help you to improve loads, well worth all the time and effort.

The A level Fine Art course is an exciting, inspiring 2 year journey.  It allows you to look into the world of art and find great ways of expressing yourself.

Art is enjoyable and the teachers are lovely.

Super Duper hard, but fun.

After 2 years of hard work it is worth it in the end and along with 2 of the most supportive teachers, it is made much easier and more enjoyable.

Hard work but really enjoyed it and well worth it
