This is a 1 year full time course
About the course
This course is an introduction to basic joinery and woodwork skills, designed for people wishing to take up a career within the building industry as a carpenter and joiner. Students must start at level 1 to gain the necessary skills before progressing to level 2.
Theory lessons covering the required technology are classroom based, giving you the opportunity for taking notes to aid your studies. Practical lessons take place in the Carpentry and Joinery workshops and give you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to pass the assessments.
Topics will include
- Know how to carry out safe working practices in construction
- Knowledge of Information, quantities and communicating with others
- Knowledge of building methods
- Produce basic woodworking joints
- Maintain and use Carpentry and Joinery hand tools
- Maintain and use Carpentry and Joinery portable power tools
Approximately 40% of the course is theory and 60% is practical.
You will need to bring your own safety boots, wood working tools for workshop sessions and classroom equipment for theory sessions. All other equipment will be provided. You need to attend regularly and be on time for every lesson.
Functional Skills lessons also form an important part of your course. They include Maths and English to help improve your skills in these areas. There will be a formal assessment when you are ready. Your progress will be reviewed regularly in tutorial sessions.
Personal Study Time
Students are expected to study independently in their own time, building up their knowledge of Carpentry and Joinery.
You will be given your own password to access our online learning materials, we have a comprehensive learning centre to aid your learning.

Applicants should have a willingness and a desire to study on a Carpentry and Joinery course, be able to take in technical information and demonstrate practical ability in a workshop setting.

How will it be delivered?
Your theoretical knowledge will be assessed by an online exam and unit tests. Your practical skills will be assessed by practical tests and a practical exam.

4 GCSEs at Grade 2 or above including English Language
