About the Course
This course is a training programme suitable if you like to be a Dental Nurse. A dental nurse provides 'chair-side support' for the dental team, which includes dentists, dental therapists, hygienists and technicians.
As an apprentice, you will be working as a Dental Nurse in a general dental practice, undertaking a variety of supervised tasks. Your duties will be to support the dentist in all aspects of patient care, this includes getting the appropriate instruments ready, mixing materials and ensuring patient comfort. You will learn about taking notes from the dentist's dictation for records. Your role will also include decontaminating the surgery the instruments and possible helping with reception work, making appointments, taking payments, dealing with paperwork and meeting and reassuring patients.
The day you are in college you will be working towards a City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing. The course consists of a minimum of 30 hours per week, which includes attending college one day a week.
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Double Science, English Language and Maths.
You will also need to gain a suitable employer. You can do this through searching for vacancies on our website http://www.sheffcol.ac.uk/apprenticeship/vacancies/ and applying directly to the employer. This will be followed by a competitive interview process.

Where can it lead?
The role of a dental nurse is regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC). You will have to register with the GDC upon satisfactory completion of the Apprenticeship. Once trained, Dental Nurses can progress into other career pathways such as Dental Therapists and Hygienists, Oral Health Promotion, Dental Practice Management or related Healthcare roles.
