About the course
This course will help develop your Engineering skills to keep up with rapidly developing technologies. It will give you the knowledge and skills you will need to meet the needs of modern engineering industries.
You will have the opportunity to learn about the design, development, manufacture and maintenance of engineering products and systems. It is largely classroom based with one two hour practical workshop event per week.
A key feature of the course is learning how to work safely and effectively. You will learn how materials and equipment should be handled and the most appropriate personal protective equipment to use. You will be able to use and interpret textual, numeric and graphical information when working with engineering drawings, technical manuals, reference tables, specifications, charts or electronic displays. One of the main functions of an engineer is to solve problems, many of which require the use of mathematical formulae and equations so you will work on your mathematical skills. CAD/CAM technologies have replaced some traditional techniques in engineering manufacture. You will develop skills in this by designing and producing simple components using CAD/CAM, then using CNC software to produce a component on a CNC machine tool. Some of the other units include Machining Techniques, Part Programming of CNC Machines and Marking Out.
Some students may have the opportunity to take part in trips abroad such as recent visits to Volvo in Brussels, BMW in Munich and Skoda in Prague to learn about how the Engineering concepts you learn about in the classroom are applied in the workplace in large Engineering firms.
You will be required to study functional skills or GCSE English or maths if you do not already hold a minimum of GCSE grade 4. (Many universities and employers ask for a minimum of GCSE grade 4 in both maths and English).
Will this course suit me?
This course would suit students who are looking for a career in product design, aerospace, manufacturing, electronics, electrical engineering, or the automotive industry as a project leader or designer.
Personal Study Time
You are expected to work independently on project work away from the college.
