About the course
This course provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the design, development, manufacture and production of engineering products and systems.
There is a strong mathematical focus to this course and we recommend that applicants work towards the higher tier GCSE paper in Maths and aim for a B. This will ensure you have covered the necessary mathematical elements to cope with the demands of the course.
Some of the topics covered on the course will include Mechanical Principles, Properties and Applications of Materials, CAD, Measurement and Inspection, Health and Safety and CAM. You will also complete an Engineering Project as part of the course. You are expected to work independently on assignment work away from the college.
There are work experience opportunities both in the UK and abroad. The Engineering department has developed links with an Engineering firm in Germany. There will also be chance to take part in trips abroad; for example, recent visits have been to BMW and Allianz Arena in Munich and Skoda in Prague.
You will be encouraged to enter Engineering competitions to test and stretch your knowledge. Previous students won a national competition for building the best spaghetti bridge. Visits to national Engineering events at venues such as the NEC in Birmingham will help keep you up to date with current trends in the field of Engineering.

This course would suit you if you are looking for a career in product design, aerospace, manufacturing, electronics, electrical engineering, or the automotive industry as a project leader or designer.
