This is a one year full time course
If you want to work for a wildlife trust, country park or country estate this Environmental Conservation programme could be the one for you. This course will develop your knowledge, practical and technical skills to work within this sector of the land-based industry.
About the course
On this course you will learn about wildlife habitat management, ground preparation and planting, pruning shrubs and trees, health and safety, using and maintaining tools and machinery, You will work as part of a team, out in the community and with children & young people during environmental activities.
Approximately 65% of the course is practical and 35% is classroom work. You will also be expected to work independently outside class to produce a portfolio of work.
Course enrichment activities include visits to local parks, gardens, and local woodland and wild-life habitats. Experience of work, with practical assessments, takes place at local parks and though working with community partner organisations.
On your programme you will also study for Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade 4. You may also have the opportunity to gain a first aid award.
Staff and Facilities
You will learn from staff with a range of land-based qualifications and industry backgrounds, and have the opportunity to work with local employers or voluntary organisations in the area. The excellent facilities, which were constructed during 2014, include the latest industry standard workshops, new fully automated glasshouses, horticultural equipment and machinery.
Will the course suit me?
This course is suitable for those who wish to gain an environmental conservation qualification and develop their careers within the industry.
You will need to be practically minded, like working outdoors in all seasons and be able to undertake a range of tasks including lifting and moving, ground preparation and planting. You also need to be prepared to do some study in your own time.
City and Guilds Level 2 (0070) in Environmental Conservation. For students moving into suitable employment this qualification can also form part of the Apprenticeship Framework for Environmental Conservation.
4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English Language.
