Interested in a career in Fashion / Textiles? Fashion and textiles offers a wide range of career opportunities and is one of the biggest employers in the UK, with currently 860,000 employees. The facilities at the Hillsborough College site, provide workshops and studios with industry equipment and specialist staff that have all worked in the fashion/textiles industry.

The course focuses on the development and application of specialist expertise, knowledge and skills required by learners to pursue a career in Fashion and/or Textiles. The programme is designed to help you to discover and develop your talents, strengths and individuality in a wide range of career related disciplines including fashion design, textile design, illustration, pattern cutting, garment manufacture, garment technology, as well as business and marketing aspects of the industry. This course will prepare you for employment in the industry at assistant level, apprenticeships or onto higher education.


This course is a nationally recognised qualification and has been designed to develop the breadth of skills and knowledge to allow successful progression to Higher Education, Apprenticeships and into related employment. The programme is designed to help you to discover and develop your talents, interests and strengths. You will be taught through tutor-led demonstrations, presentations and regular tutorials to support your studies.

In the first year you will develop a range of fundamental practical skills, gain industry knowledge, and build an awareness of the variety of opportunities available to you as the next generation of fashion & textiles professionals.

Throughout the course you will learn about the historical and cultural contexts of art, design and fashion. You will study the work of artists, designers and craftspeople, both in fashion/textiles and in associated industries. You will participate in trips and visits to museum and galleries, locally and nationally. You will link with local artists/designers and employers as well as attending a programme of visits from artists and designers.

We have connections with local, national and international fashion and textile professionals, and you will have the opportunity to work alongside these practitioners in workshops, masterclasses and on live briefs.

We aim to provide you with the necessary experience to develop the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to be successful in the fashion and textiles industries. Project briefs are dynamic and responsive to current trends, social and cultural topics and issues. Projects also allow you to be creative and demonstrate your ability to develop concepts, problem solve and to communicate your ideas in a professional, confident manner.

In the second year the course will develop your skills further and provide you with the opportunity to develop your specialist skills and understanding within your own areas of interest. At this stage you will also evidence progression opportunities and build a specialist portfolio of work, digitally and physically in preparation for Higher Education and employment interviews.

As well as timetabled studio and workshop sessions, you will be expected to produce further project work independently, and engage with independent and online learning assignments.

Staff and Facilities You will learn from experienced and specialist fashion and textiles tutors who will be able to offer advice and support in terms of your studies and future goals. Classes are delivered in well-resourced art studios, IT rooms and specialist workshops for fashion and textiles.

How will it be delivered?

Assessment, is by continual assessment of coursework including practical, theoretical and written project work. You will need to present your work at times to tutors and your peers. You must successfully pass each unit in order to progress and achieve the full extended diploma. You will be assessed internally by teaching staff and by an external moderator from the awarding body, UAL. Your final grade will be awarded at the end of the course after the external moderator has agreed all grades.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grade 4 or above, including English Language and preferably an art related subject, or portfolio of art / design work.

Your next steps...

On completion of this course learners will have the necessary skills to apply for a range of Higher Education opportunities at universities throughout the UK. The UK is now globally recognized as a world leader in Fashion Education. Learners will also have the option to study a for a further year at Sheffield College on the Level 3/4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design to enable further exploration of Fashion/Textiles and the Creative Industries.


Learners will gain the skills and professional attributes to transition into a range of employment opportunities at a junior or assistant level in design, pattern cutter, sewing machinist, dress maker, merchandiser, stylist, costume designer and business or retail areas of the fashion industry.
