Overview

This course helps you to develop the practical skills and technical knowledge to work in the building services industry as a painter and decorator.

As an apprentice you will be working with a painter decorator applying painted and decorative finishes to internal and external structures. You will be working in an environment where your duties will encompass many aspects of painting and decorating. You will work on all types of buildings; internally and externally ranging from domestic households to new build and refurbishments. Tasks may include painting, paper hanging, spraying and applying specialist coatings. You will be expected at times to work at height

Details

The day you are in college you will be working towards a Diploma in painting & decorating. You will learn about all aspects of painting and decorating including how to prepare surfaces, decorative effects and high velocity low pressure spray painting. You will cover health and safety in the workplace and the use of power tools and scaffolding. The course will include wallpapering and basic specialist effects (depending on the type of work you carry out on-site)

If you need to complete Functional Skills qualifications, these will be delivered in college.

Qualification Titles

  • Level 2 Painting & Decorating Diploma.
  • NVQ in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting

Functional maths and English level 2

How will it be delivered?

You will build a portfolio of evidence to support the tasks you complete at the workplace to demonstrate you can complete tasks safely and use knowledge learnt.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English and Maths. 

You will also need to gain a suitable employer. You can do this through searching for vacancies on our website http://www.sheffcol.ac.uk/apprenticeship/vacancies/ and applying directly to the employer. This will be followed by a competitive interview process. Or by approaching employers yourself to ask if they will take on an apprentice. Once you find a suitable employer you should contact the college with their details.
