What will I do on the programme?
This programme is a popular choice as it creates lots of opportunities for any young
person to grow and develop in preparation for future employment or study. This programme is designed to meet very specific individual needs, setting individual/ personal targets to improve and embedding English and maths throughout.
You will be required to complete ten units of work, to be completed as written tasks/
activities within the classroom and you will be assessed on your performance when you attend a work placement.
The work placement takes place within college one morning per week, running a
variety of retail stalls with opportunities to develop skills in:
– working with others
– commitment to work (employability skills)
– following rules and procedures within a work environment
You are required to wear a uniform which is provided by college at no cost to you.
At the start of each term, you will set your own individual targets with the support of your
subject Tutor. Your subject Tutor will also agree a work-based target for you to work on throughout the term.
If you have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan, your targets will be developed in conjunction with the EHC plan outcomes and we will work closely with the Special Educational Needs and Disability team in college to ensure you are working towards the right goals for you.
Your subject Tutor will monitor your progress and you will record weekly target sheets to identify activities undertaken to support your development.
You will compile a portfolio of work, including written work from the classroom and observational
assessments obtained from your work placement. These will link directly with the ten units required for this programme and, when complete, will be submitted for external verification.
As this programme is to prepare you for the world of work, there are certain
professional standards that you are expected to show:
– to behave in a safe and responsible manner
– to show respect and tolerance for others
– to take part in all lessons
– to attend the work placement every week
– to be prepared to wear your uniform whilst attending your work
Once an application has been made for this programme, you will be invited
for an informal interview. At the interview, you will be asked to complete a short piece of writing to assess your level of English and we will ask you
to complete a short activity to assess your level of maths. We will also ask a few questions about you and why you wish to join the retail programme at college.
