About this course

Sport (Coaching & Development) Level 3 programmes offer you the opportunity to develop an understanding of the sport and fitness sectors and help prepare you for a career or higher education in a variety of areas including teaching, exercise and fitness, coaching and leadership and sports development.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma is made up of 18 study units and the BTEC Level 3 Diploma is made up of 12 study units. You will learn about anatomy and physiology in sport, fitness testing, training and programming, organising sports events, practical sport, safe and effective sport coaching, sport development, sports injuries and sports nutrition.

You have the opportunity to tailor your sport programme through course enrichment pathway activities. Students choosing the teaching and coaching pathway could study for a CSLA and HSLA award.

Other course enrichment activities can include visits to sport organisations, stadiums and venues such as the English Institute for Sport, the Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford.

You will be expected to take part in a two-week full time block work placement. This will be related to a chosen career outcome which could include teaching, coaching, fitness, personal training, gym instructing, sport coaching and development.

You have the opportunity to take part in a range of sports both recreationally and competitively including the chance to compete in our football and basketball teams in the British Colleges leagues.

On your programme you will study for English and Maths qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade 4.

In addition to classroom based lessons, practical activities and supported time to complete assignments you will also be required to study independently to complete course work assignments.

Although you are not expected to buy specific clothing, you can purchase college sweatshirts and t- shirts if you wish. You will need to bring appropriate kit for indoor and outdoor activities. You will be expected to contribute towards the cost of trips and visits and to pay for your DBS check. You may be entitled to help with this from the college's Learner Support Fund.

Staff and Facilities

You will learn from highly qualified, expert staff with a range of academic and sport work related backgrounds. Students also benefit from our strong connections to the city's professional sports clubs including, Sheffield FC, SUFC, SWFC, Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield Sharks and Sheffield Steeldogs. The excellent facilities for our sport students include a fully equipped fitness suite, sports hall, gym and 3G outdoor pitches.

Will the course suit me?

You should have a keen interest in sport and fitness and a reasonable level of fitness and stamina. It is not essential to show a high level of sports performance. You will need good time management skills in order to manage coursework and assignment deadlines.
