ISF is the fast track route to a sports coaching career. A unique two-year programme for school leavers, it provides all the essential qualifications, knowledge and hands on experience needed to start working in the sports, leisure and fitness industries. ISF is an alternative to A-levels or apprenticeships, designed for those who want to turn their love for sport into a successful career.

This programme is intended for post-16 learners who wish to study a vocational sport and physical activity qualification, and be provided with the opportunity to apply theory through a number of practical activities, such as coaching.

Students will attend 6th Form 2-days per week, and complete 6-12 hours of work placement with industry leading sports coaching organisations on the other three days. This course is ideal for anyone who is looking for a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on work experience.

Qualification - Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activities

What will you learn?

The qualification consists of eight mandatory units.

- Apply Physiology to sport and physical activity 

- Apply Nutrition to sport and physical activity 

- Apply Psychology for sport and physical activity 

- Develop the community through sport and physical activity 

- Design and deliver sport and physical activity programmes 

- Deliver physical education and school sport 

- Apply research methods for sport and physical activity 

- Enterprise and innovation in the sport and active leisure industry

Work Placement

Students will work alongside experienced and passionate sports coaching professionals, learning how to apply their theoretical knowledge practically, with real-life coaching opportunities to suit all interests.

How will it be delivered?

Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activities

The qualification element of ISF will be delivered over 2-days per week at Notre Dame High School, Sheffield. Students will receive a first class education, taking part in a combination of theory and practical lessons each week.


Students will be assessed using a combination of externally assessed exams, internally assessed assignments and observations of practical performance.

Work Placement

Students will be placed with ISF employer partners who will help nurture each student throughout the 2-years, preparing them for the world of work on completion of the ISF programme.

Entry requirements

Five GCSE’s at grade 4 or above (this must include Maths and English)

*Student enrolment will be considered on an individual bases and there may be an opportunity to resit Maths or English alongside the ISF programme.
