Overview
Students completing the course successfully will have a thorough understanding of drama and theatre, highly toned analytical and creative skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others. The AS course provides students with the opportunity to study plays from the point of view of the director, designers, performers and critic. The full A Level extends this understanding and enables students to apply it to their own creative work. The course provides opportunites for students to make and understand drama, recognising it as a practical art form in which ideas and meanings are communicated to an audience through a choice of form, style and convention.
Details
Component 1: The devising process
Students devise a piece of theatre which they then perform. Throughout their exploration and devising process they will record their process in a portfolio.
Component 2: Text for performance
Performace of a professionally published play. Students take on the role of either performer and designer. Students also perform a monologue or duologue from a different play text for performace.
Component 3: Theatre makers in practice
A two and a half written paper focusing on evaluation of live theatre, exploration of a set text and an interpretation of a performance text for a contemporary audience.
How will it be delivered?
Component One: The devising process - 40% Internally assessed
Component Two: Text for performance - 20% Internally assessed
Component Three: Theatre makers in Practice - 40% externally assessed - Written exam
Students are examined in Components One and Two at the end of AS. All Components are examined for the A Level.
Entry requirements
A grade 5 or above in GCSE Drama.

The emphasis on communication skills, confidence building and teamwork ensures our subject has links with a wide range of subjects in Higher education. A significant number of students apply to Drama School or study Drama and Theatre based course at University. Some pursue a career in teaching. The skills developed are transferable to any chosen career.
