What will you be working towards?
GCE A/AS Level or Equivalent
Core Maths is a brand new Level 3 qualification in Quantitative Problem Solving (QPS)for those who want to keep up or improve their valuable maths skills but who are not planning on taking AS or A Level Mathematics. At the end of the two-year course, you will come out with a level 3 qualification - similar to an AS.
Sound understanding of mathematical concepts, skills and techniques from GCSE and beyond
Competency in interpreting and explaining solutions to problems in context
Confidence in applying mathematical and statistical thinking and reasoning in a range of new and unfamiliar contexts to solve real-life problems
Fluency in procedural skills, common problem-solving skills and strategies
Statistics for data analysis
Statistical problem solving (SPS)
The use of technology - in particular, using spreadsheets.
How will it be delivered?
There are two components:
Introduction to Quantitative Reasoning (01) - 2 hour written paper (50%)
Statistical Problem Solving (02) - 2 hour written paper (50%)
GCSE 4 in Maths.
Your next steps...
Core Maths is a new course but already universities have come out in strong support of it. Even subjects like History now recognise the importance of statistics and so this qualification will help you hit the ground running at university. The course will carry the same number of points as an AS qualification.
Many roles in today's workplace require high levels of budget management and problem solving skills; Mathematical Studies will be a useful tool in equipping you with these skills.
