Overview

If you enjoy cooking, have a passion and interest in food, want to develop your practical skills and experiment with new foods then the WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition is the course for you. It doesn’t have to be a career choice, it’s also a life skill.

Year 12: Meeting the Nutritional Needs of Specific Groups

This involves a 3-hour practical activity supplemented by written work and an externally marked written examination. You will demonstrate an understanding of the science of nutrition and nutritional needs in a wide range of contexts, throughout which you will experience ongoing practical sessions in order to gain a wide range of high level skills and produce quality food items which meet the needs of individuals.

Year 13: Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat

This is an externally marked case study and involves experimentation and written research. This unit allows you to develop your understanding of the science of food safety and hygiene; essential knowledge for anyoneinvolved in food production in the home or wishing to work in the food industry. Again practical sessions will compliment the gaining of theoretical knowledge.

Optional Units: Experimenting to Solve Food Production or Current Issues in Food Science and Nutrition

Exploring one of the two optional internally assessed units will allow you the opportunity to study subjects of a particular interest or relevance to you, building on previous learning and experiences.

The WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition is assessed through a combination of a written exam, external assignment set and marked by WJEC and two centre marked assignments. You will be involved in weekly practical sessions, building on the skills and knowledge developed at GCSE (a GCSE in Food Technology is desirable, but not essential).


Entry requirements

To secure a place at our Post-16 Centre you will need five or more GCSE passes at Grade 5 or above and a minimum of a Grade 4 in both English Language and Mathematics. You will also need a Grade 5 at GCSE (or equivalent vocational qualification) for most subjects you want to study at A Level.

This qualification can lead to further and higher study in Food and Nutrition, Human Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition and Food Science and Technology.

A wide range of career opportunities are available including careers within the food industry, Nutritionist, Product Developer, Sports Coach, Fitness Instructor, Food Manufacture and within Government Agencies developing food products.
