This qualification will enable you to explore your practical and academic abilities, allowing you to discover and develop a range of skills within the Dance sector. The crucial and transferable skills you will develop will range from independent to group work, where you will be able to develop mastery in dancing, movement and expression, as well as increasing your academic knowledge of Dance, the industry and live performance. The aim of the qualification is to prepare learners for entry to a range of sector related degrees and apprenticeships that can lead to employment within the Creative Industries.
GCSE or BTEC Level 2 in Dance/ Expressive Arts/Drama or dance school experience is very useful for this course. If you have no or very little dance experience, is important that
you are prepared to have a go at everything and focus on improving your skills. It is also important that you have experience in performing in front of peers and an audience or that you are willing to have a go at this, as this is a crucial element of the course.
In Y12 you will complete the following units:
• Unit 2: Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance (internally assessed)
• Unit 1: Investigating Practitioners’ Work (externally assessed)
In Y13 you will complete the following units:
• Unit 12: Contemporary Dance Technique (internally assessed)
• Unit 3: Group Performance Workshop (externally assessed)
You will study a range of dance styles and creative approaches such as contemporary, jazz and commercial dance, as well as increasing your knowledge of safe practice, the dance industry, practitioners and live performance. You will explore a range of practical performance projects working independently and in groups from a stimulus, theme/dance style or music, to create dance for a live audience, based on the skills you learn in workshops and lessons and you will reflect on your practical work. You will explore practitioners’ such as; Bob Fosse, Christopher Bruce, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Frantic Assembly, DV8 and Andrew Lloyd Webber, through practical exploration and research. You will also; research in depth
and complete an extended piece of writing on practitioners’ styles, techniques and repertoire, complete a research report exploring and investigating into the roles and skills of a performer and prepare a presentation based on practitioners and their work.
Assessments are internally assessed; in college by your teacher and externally assessed; sent off to the exam board.
Assessments are a combination of practical performances, coursework, evaluation/ target setting and set tasks by the exam board BTEC Pearson.
You will need to achieve the general entry requirements for Level 3 study. Grade 5 English.
Ideally you should have some experience of practical dance (through private lessons or dance study at Level 2). All learners applying for this course should be participating in private dance
lessons in order to make the necessary practical progress.
