Overview

This apprenticeship is suitable for you if you are in a role as support staff and have responsibilities that are closely supervised. The course provides you with skills and knowledge to support the development of a highly qualified well skilled workforce within the children and young people’s sector, ensuring that children and young people gain the best possible care and support.

Details

You will study all the mandatory units listed below and chose from optional units until you reach a minimum of 35 credits.

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)


Mandatory Units:

  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Contribute to the support of child and young person development
  • Contribute to children and young people’s health and safety
  • Contribute to the support of the positive environments for children and young people
  • Understand partnership working in services for children and young people


Optional Units:

  • Understand child and young person development
  • Promote child and young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • Develop positive relationships with children, young people and others involved in their care
  • Working together for the benefit of children and young people
  • Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people
  • Understand the needs of children and young people who are vulnerable and experiencing poverty and disadvantage
  • Understand the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people with behavioural, social and emotional difficulties
  • Support the creativity of children and young people
  • Support children and young people at meal or snack times
  • Support children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs
  • Support children and young people’s play and leisure
  • Contribute to the support of children’s communication, language and literacy

How will it be delivered?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, observations in the workplace and assessment tasks. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

Entry requirements

  • You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
  • Some settings require three GCSEs at grades A*-D including GCSE English at grade 3 or above
  • It is desirable that you have English and maths at grade C or above for the apprenticeship but this is not essential as Functional Skills is delivered as part of the Apprenticeship programme
  • You need to be employed within the childcare setting or have an employer in this area willing to take you on as an apprentice

  • As your programme may involve working with children, you will be required to undertake a satisfactory Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check
