Overview

The apprenticeship is suitable for you if you are in a role in learning support and have responsibilities that are closely supervised and work under the direction of the class teacher. The course provides you with the skills and knowledge for the roles of teaching, classroom and learning support assistant; special needs assistant; behavior support assistant/co-ordinator; pastoral/welfare assistant; foundation stage assistant or team leader.

You will study all of the mandatory units and some of the optional units listed below until you reach a minimum of 30 credits.

  • Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)


Mandatory units:

  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Supporting children and young people’s health and safety
  • Supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Supporting learning activities


Optional units:

  • Prepare and maintain learning environments
  • Provide displays in schools
  • Supporting children and young people at meal or snack times
  • Supporting children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs
  • Supporting children and young people’s play and leisure
  • Supporting children and young people’s travel outside of the setting
  • Supporting extra-curricular activities
  • Supporting the use of information and communication technology for teaching and learning
  • Move and position individuals in accordance with their plan of care
  • Provide support for therapy sessions

How will it be delivered?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

Entry requirements

  • You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
  • Some settings require three GCSEs at grades A*-D including GCSE English at grade 3 or above
  • It is desirable that you have GCSE English and maths at grade C or above but this is not essential as Functional Skills is delivered as part of the Apprenticeship programme
  • You need to be employed within the childcare setting or have an employer in this area willing to take you on as an apprentice

  • As your programme may involve working with children, you will be required to undertake a satisfactory Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check
