Overview

This applied science course covers biological, chemical and physical science topics. It will provide you with the knowledge, understanding, technical and employability skills to help you find employment in the applied science sector or to give you entry to a wide range of higher education courses.

Is this course for me?

If you want to study or work in science, get practical experience and knowledge of working in a laboratory then the course is perfect for you. You should have a positive attitude, an enquiring mind and good time management skills to be able to work to coursework targets and deadlines. You will develop scientific practical techniques and learn about working in the science industry. You can also build on skills from Level 2 science such as communication, analytical, evaluative and research skills. It is purely assignment and coursework based, where you will be taught theory sessions and then given an assignment to complete based on the work. This would suit you if you are looking for a course that will develop your organisational abilities and enjoy researching and completing written tasks.

What will I learn?

You will cover core modules such as working in the science industry, which will give you an overview of different laboratories and areas you may enter. Another core module is scientific practical techniques in which you will carry out investigations and write them up as a laboratory report. In addition a range of optional units will be studied which could include topics from biochemistry, chemistry, electricity, mathematical tools in science, microbiology and physiology. Delivery of the course will be through a mixture of theory and practical sessions.

What else will I gain?

Course enrichment activities include science related trips and guest speakers from universities, and you will take part in science project work to develop key science skills. You may be entitled to help from the college's Learner Support Fund with the cost of trips, visits and anything else you need to buy for your course. The course is over three days per week which gives you two days to do experience if you choose as well as work on assignments.
