The Level 3 Engineering course is run over two years. The first year you will study towards the National Foundation Diploma in Engineering and the second year you will study the National Extended Diploma in Engineering.

The course has been designed for learners who wish to pursue a career in engineering and collaborate across, and apply knowledge, skills and understanding in, other branches of engineering.

This qualification has a focus on a broad range of engineering specialist areas including electrical and electronic, mechanical, and manufacturing.


You will study a range of topics including:

Year 1

  • Engineering Principles
  • Delivery of Engineering Safely as a Team
  • Engineering Product Design
  • Applied Commercial and Quality Principals
  • Maintenance of Mechanical systems
  • Mechanical Behaviour of Metallic Materials
  • Manufacturing Secondary Machining Processes
  • Work Experience in the Engineering Sector
All the above will be used as evidence for eight units which make up the qualification including two exam-based units.

Year 2

  • A Specialist Engineering Project
  • Microcontroller Systems for Engineering
  • Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems
  • Computer Aided Design in Engineering (CAD)
  • Mechanical Behaviour of Non- metallic Materials
  • Manufacturing Primary Forming
  • Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing)
All the above will be used as evidence for seven units which make up the qualification including one exam-based unit.
