Medical Science is the science of dealing with the maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of diseases. Medical scientists are at the forefront of healthcare services, as they are vital in the diagnosis of disease, determining the effectiveness of treatments and searching for new cures. This course is perfect if you are interested in careers related to healthcare and medical research and have already enjoyed successfully studying science. It is an Applied Diploma course which is the equivalent to one A Level and would be studied alongside two other A Levels.


The course covers the key topic areas of health, physiology and disease, as well as providing the opportunity to study the areas of pharmacology, physiological measurement, clinical testing and medical research. Learners are required to complete 6 units:

•Unit 1: Human health and disease

•Unit 2: Physiological measurement techniques

•Unit 3: Medical Science research methods

•Unit 4: Medicines and treatment of disease

•Unit 5: Clinical laboratory techniques

•Unit 6: Medical case study

How will it be delivered?

Learning methods

The course will be delivered through a variety of teaching and learning methods which will include group work, practical activities, research tasks and independent learning. Learners need to be able to work well independently and meet coursework deadlines.


You will be assessed using a combination of internal and external assessments.

These units will be internally assessed: 

• Physiological measurement techniques

• Medical Science research methods

• Medicines and treatment of disease

These units will be externally assessed:

• Human health and disease (via written examinations)

• Clinical laboratory techniques (via an externally set and marked task based assessment)

• Medical case study (via written examinations)

The Level 3 Applied Diploma in Medical Science qualification is graded A*-E

Entry requirements

We generally ask for a GCSE point score of 5 or above to study a two-year A Level programme.

This will ideally include a 5 or above in English and Maths.

Your average GCSE score will include the Grades for all your GCSE subjects, added together, then divided by the number of subjects you’ve taken.

Please note: If you have a GCSE point score between 4 and 5 you can access certain A Level subjects.

Specific entry requirements

GCSE Combined Science at level 4 or above or GCSE Biology at level 4 or above plus GCSE Maths at level 4 or above

Your next steps...

This course will equip you with scientific knowledge and understanding and the practical skills to support progression to a range of job roles within health care. When supported by other appropriate qualifications, the course will enable progression to a range of Applied Science Higher Education programmes, such as biomedical science, life sciences and physiology.

Please note: This course does not allow progression into medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or veterinary science.
