The Pearson BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure has been developed to give learners the opportunity to:

  • engage in learning which is relevant to them and will provide opportunities to develop a range of sporting skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life
  • achieve a nationally recognised Entry or Level 1 vocationally related qualification
  • progress to employment in sport and active leisure
  • progress to related general and/or vocational qualifications.

Under the guidance of A license and B license qualified Sheffield Wednesday academy coaches, the students have a structured training programme and weekly fixtures against other Premier League and EFL clubs’ equivalent squads. Players are supported with their development and progression into an environment deemed best-suited for their personal development at that moment in time, with several players in the current programme already making the step up into semi-professional football.

A comprehensive football development programme allows for individual and team development through a detailed football curriculum with sessions across the week, including goal-keeping specialist coaching sessions. Players on the programme will have the opportunity to represent Sheffield Wednesday Football Club against other professional clubs and local.


The programme is made up of 5 key elements; Sports studies, Enrichment, English and Maths, Work experience and Tutorial sessions.

  • Planning own Fitness Programme
  • Physical Activities for Children
  • Assisting a Leader of Sport or Active Leisure Activities to Plan & Deliver an Activity

  • Assisting at a Sport or Active Leisure Event
  • Investigate Rights & Responsibilities at Work
  • Job Opportunities in Sport & Active Leisure

Enrichment opportunities contain access to the football development programme, additional qualifications and unique experiences. Within this academic year students have the opportunity to access; FA Level 1 Football coaching qualification, National Pool Lifeguard qualification, Level 2 in the development of multi-skills qualification, Manchester City Champions League games, Xscape SNOZONE sessions, USA scholarship programmes & USA coaching opportunities. In addition to these opportunities students have an unrestricted, full-membership at BFIT gym located only 5 minutes away.

English & Maths will also be delivered alongside your sports studies. Students who achieve a grade 3 in either will resit their GCSE exams with SWFCCP. Students achieving a grade 2 or 1 will study a functional skills qualification allowing them a foundation of knowledge before progressing on.

As part of the course, you will be required to complete work experience in a variety of sports settings as well as performing various roles within the organisation of sports events.

Tutorial sessions are held weekly with students by our personal tutors. These crucial sessions aim to improve the wider development of our students within today's society. Money management, mental health, job searching and application, UCAS/ University and application, are just some of the sessions we hold.

How will it be delivered?

All units are assessed through assignments which are submitted via the interactive learning platform in a variety of formats; these include written reports, posters, practical sports, demonstrations, group tasks, interviews, practical coaching, presentations, work experience, projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments.

Entry requirements

No previous qualifications necessary but a keen interest in sport/health/fitness is essential.
