Why Study Mathematics?
Mathematics at this level consists of the study of Pure Mathematics and the study of the application of mathematics to the physical world such as Mechanics and Statistics.
As well as being a highly rewarding subject in its own right, Maths is also a facilitating subject, which means that it will support the study of many other subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computing, Engineering and Psychology. It will also support progression to many competitive careers.
At UTC Sheffield City Centre Campus you will study Pure Maths (algebra) together with:
5 lessons per week.
A Level Mathematics (2 years)
The course is assessed by 3 examinations in the summer of Y13.
Students are internally assessed through project work/assessments. Students are assessed at the end of Y12 to see if they are suitable to continue to A2. If they are not suitable they may study for an AS in Maths over 2 years, or Core Maths.
Support sessions are available to all students.
At least a Grade 6 in Mathematics is required at GCSE.
Students must select a Technical Specialism Subject alongside this course.
An A-Level in mathematics demonstrates high levels of numeracy and logical thinking, which are valued in a wide range of employment areas. It also provides a strong foundation for further academic study in Maths and related disciplines.
