Is This Course For Me?

This course is for you if you have an interest in working in a customer focused environment, providing customer service in a variety of ways to a range of different customers (including internal and external customers).  You will learn all about the basics of how to provide good customer service and the importance of this to any business organisation.  You will use this knowledge to practice your skills in the workplace and evidence your understanding and competence in carrying out a range of tasks. 

What Will I Learn?

You will learn about the basics of customer service delivering and understanding customer service, communication (written and verbal), processing information, promotion of goods and services, improving customer service, dealing with problems and complaints. 

What Else Will I Gain?

An apprenticeship with The Sheffield College provides quality support and training materials to help you learn about the topics and apply them to your own job.  You will be based with an employer who will provide you with the opportunity to practice and apply the learning as well as giving you training in the specific needs of your job. This learning and evidence of competence will be used to gain the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Customer Service.

On your programme you will also study for Functional Skills in Maths and English as required by the framework. 

Why Study This Course At The Sheffield College?

You will be linked to a Training and Assessment facilitator who is experienced in assessment of NVQs in Customer Service and who will provide a link between college and your workplace.  There is a team of experienced, specialised and enthusiastic lecturers, who support this process and provide any additional learning materials and input required.  You will have access to up-to-date IT facilities and course resources on the college intranet which can be accessed at home. 



How will it be delivered?

Throughout the course you will be assessed in the workplace to show your competence at the job.  You will be expected to build a portfolio, or file, of evidence to demonstrate this.  Your college work is assessed jointly by your tutor and assessor using a range of methods including taught sessions and written work.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grade 3 or above (or acceptable alternatives) including a minimum grade 3 in English Language and Maths no lower than a 2. 

You will also need to gain a suitable employer. You can do this through searching for vacancies on our website and applying directly to the employer. This will be followed by a competitive interview process.   

Or by approaching employers yourself to ask if they will take on an apprentice. Once you find a suitable employer you should contact the college with their details.

Your next steps...

Where can it lead?

This course opens up a wide range of opportunities, often leading to offers of full-time employment.  You may progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship course (Level 3) often with the same employer, or may decide that a different area of work interests you (eg specialising in accounts or administration) and could access an apprenticeship in that area.  Completion of the framework will show that you have completed a course of academic and vocational study and provide you with the qualifications you need to apply for job roles within the customer service area, with a range of employers including health service, universities, local and national government offices and many other small, medium and large employers.
