About the course

This is an intermediate vocational qualification which focuses on the underlying principles and practices of professional make-up.

You will study core and specialist units in how to apply make-up, instruct on make-up, art of photographic make up, body art design, eyelash and eyebrow treatments, hairdressing,  art of dressing hair and colouring, create an image based on a theme, make and style, postiche, anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and communication.

Functional Skills lessons also form an important part of your course. This will include either maths or English to help you improve your skills in these areas. You will be given passwords for our online learning materials to support your learning.

You will be asked to purchase a uniform which must be worn at all times when in the salon. You will also need to have some key pieces of equipment that will be discussed when you come to the transition event. Those in financial hardship can apply for help from the college's Learner Support Fund.

There will be opportunities to go on trips relevant to the Hair and Make-up industry. Previous trips include: The IMATS Media Make-up exhibition in London, The Salon International and The Alternative Hair Show in London and The Clothes Show Live in Birmingham.

Will this course suit me?

You need to have some artist flair and an interest in both hair and make-up. You need to have physical stamina as you are often on your feet all day.

How will it be delivered?

The course is assessed entirely by coursework therefore you need to have good time management skills and be able to work to targets and deadlines. Practical assessments will be carried out in the salon and make up studio following training and practice.

4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English Language
