This is a 1 year full time course.
About the course
This is an intermediate vocational qualification which focuses on the underlying principles and practices of hairdressing.
All students will study core and specialist units in client consultation, shampooing/conditioning, plaiting and twisting, blow drying and setting hair (including long hair work), cutting techniques, colouring techniques, perming techniques, health and safety, reception, selling and display techniques. On All Hair Types you will study relaxing techniques and styling and dressing Afro Caribbean hair. There will be a chance for you to develop yourself in the role.
You will be asked to purchase a uniform which must be worn at all times when in the salon. You will also need to have some key pieces of equipment that will be discussed when you come to the transition event. Those in financial hardship can apply for help from the college's Learner Support Fund.
There will be opportunities to go on trips relevant to the hairdressing industry. Previous trips include: The Salon International and The Alternative Hair Show in London, The Clothes Show Live in Birmingham and The Winter Gardens Hair Fair in Blackpool. There will also be opportunities to enter competitions with the National Hairdressing Federation, Wella and Babyliss. Selected students will also have the opportunity to participate in international exchange programmes to Spain and Japan.
Maths and English lessons also form an important part of your course. This will include maths or English to help you improve your skills in these areas. You will be given passwords for our online learning materials to support your learning.
You will be expected to complete 15 hours of work experience.
Will this course suit me?
This course is ideal for students who are excellent communicators with good social skills and are good listeners. You need to have physical stamina as you are often on your feet all day. You need a degree of artist flair and a good attitude.
