About the course

On this course you will learn about the activities undertaken by sport and exercise scientists and sports therapists. Sport & exercise sciences core elements of anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics are seen in almost every aspect of sport. There are increasing career opportunities for sport and exercise scientists in the sport, fitness, health and exercise community.

The course covers sport & exercise anatomy, physiology and psychology, sport injuries, sport nutrition, sport exercise, sport massage, fitness testing and sport research methods.

Much of the course takes place in the classroom and sports laboratory, however you will be expected to apply your understanding to a practical sport situation. Practical sessions can take place in a sports hall, 3G football pitch, pool or fitness suite.

All students will undertake a work placement. This will be related to a chosen career outcome which could include teaching, coaching, personal training, gym instructing or health careers such as physiotherapy, paramedic studies, or occupational therapy.

On your programme you will study for Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade 4.

You also have the opportunity to gain additional awards which could include sports massage, basketball/football coaching, fitness instructing, sports leadership and first aid. 

In addition to classroom based lessons, practical activities and supported time to complete assignments you will also be required to study independently to complete course work.

You have the opportunity to take part in a range of sports both recreationally and competitively including competing in our football and basketball teams in the British Colleges leagues.

Although you are not expected to buy specific clothing, you can purchase college sweatshirts and t- shirts if you wish and you will need to bring appropriate kit for indoor and outdoor activities. You will be expected to contribute towards the cost of trips and visits and to pay for your DBS check. You may be entitled to help with this from the college's Learner Support Fund. 

Staff and Facilities

You will learn from highly qualified, expert staff with a range of academic and sport work related backgrounds. Students also benefit from our strong connections to the city's professional sports clubs including, Sheffield FC, SUFC, SWFC, Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield Sharks and Sheffield Steeldogs. The excellent facilities for our sport students include a fully equipped fitness suite, sports hall, gym, 3G outdoor pitches and sports science laboratories.

Will the course suit me?

You should have a keen interest in a career in sports therapy, exercise referral or sports science. You will need to have good time management skills in order to manage coursework and meet assignment deadlines.

Qualification Title

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport & Exercise Sciences which is accepted for entry to university and attracts UCAS tariff points equivalent to 3 A levels.

How will it be delivered?

BTEC Sport courses are assessed mostly by course work and practical assessments however there will also be some exams.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at 4-9 / A* - C grade (or acceptable alternatives) including PE or science and a minimum grade 4 in English Language and Maths.
A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is required and will be carried out at the start

Where can it lead?

Successful students could progress onto university/higher education or into employment. Areas of progression could include sport and exercise therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, teaching and sport and cultural Studies.
