Course Summary
BTEC Applied Science is a 2-year course equivalent to 2 A-Levels, which will be taken alongside another Level 3 qualification. The course is delivered by specialists in Chemistry, Biology and Physics and is made up for 3 externally examined units and 5 internally examined coursework units, covering broad areas of the sciences.
Course Details
Year 1
Unit 1 is an externally assessed which will be examined in January. The content is across all 3 sciences and sees a progression from GCSE content to that required for the course.
Unit 3 is another externally assessed unit, assessed in May, but this unit focusses on investigation planning, practical skills, and data analysis. It is taught through 6 practical activities across all 3 sciences.
A combination of Unit 2 and sections from optional units make up the rest of Year 1.
Year 2
Unit 5 is a continuation of Unit 1, where scientific knowledge is developed and extended. This is externally assessed in January of Year 2.
Completion of Unit 2 alongside teaching of Unit 4 takes place from January and the optional units started in Year 1 are finished.
Students are then given the chance to design and plan an investigation which they will carry out and report on.
Practical

The course is made up of 8 units of which 6 are mandatory and 2 are optional. Of the 6 mandatory, 3 are externally assessed through examination in January or May/June windows
