Course Summary

This course is ideal for learners who have a strong interest in science of living things and their environments. Within the course students will learn about biological molecules, how organisms exchange materials with their environment and how they respond to changes in internal and external environments. Students will also explore genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems, and the control of gene expression.

Course Details

Module 1 Development of Practical Skills

Module 2 Foundations in Biology

Module 3 Exchange and Transport

Module 4 Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease

Module 5 Communication, Homeostasis and Energy

Module 6 Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems.

Modules 2, 3 and 4 are taught in Year 12, with modules 5 and 6 being taught in Year 13. Module 1 is integrated throughout the two years.


How will it be delivered and assessed?


Students will follow the OCR A specification and will be assessed at the end of Year 13.
The examinations are comprised of 3 papers:
Paper 1 - 2 hours 15 minutes
Paper 2 - 2 hours 15 minutes
Paper 3 - 1 hour 30 minutes
The results of these 3 papers determine the overall grade that the student receives.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 GCSE Combined Science or Grade 6 GCSE Biology

Grade 5 in GCSE English and Maths
