Course Summary

This is a 2 year full time course.

About the course

This course is suitable if you wish to pursue a career in electrical or electronic engineering.

The course consists of 5 core units and 12 specialist units. All 17 units are required to gain the Extended Diploma. During the course, a range of subjects are covered that introduce many aspects of Electrical/Electronic technology to provide you with the required underpinning knowledge of mathematics, science, business, communications, and project planning and implementation for success in the engineering workplace.

The vocational focus of each qualification is provided through the specialist units.

Topics covered include electrical and electronic principles, mathematics for technicians, principles and application of electronic devices and circuits, health & safety in the engineering workplace, construction and application of digital systems, microprocessor systems and applications.

You will also have to complete an engineering project as part of the course.

Approximately 70% of the course is theory and contextual work and 30% practical.

Please note: This course is an engineering course not an installation course and does not provide qualified electrician status.

Personal Study Time

You are expected to work independently on research away from the college.

This course would suit students who are interested in a career as an Electrical service Engineer, Electronics Service Engineer, Research and Development Assistant, Electronics Tester, Monitor of Instrumentation.

Qualification Title

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course is assessed entirely by coursework therefore you need to have good time management skills and be able to work to targets and deadlines. The overall grade for the qualification is a pass, merit or distinction.

5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including Double Science, English Language and Maths
