Course Summary

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

This course is equivalent to half an A Level

Course Details

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) allows students to undertake research on a topic that they have chosen and is not covered by their other qualifications. Students then use this research to produce a written report and, in the case of practical projects, an artefact or a production. Students can take inspiration from something studied in class or something completely unrelated to their studies. The EPQ has a taught element, but requires extended autonomous work by students.

In 2026 – 2027 students will study EPQ in 1 lesson per week.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

With the guidance of a supervisor students will independently research and present a project of their choice. As part of the EPQ, students will write a dissertation, conduct an investigation or make an artefact, as well as managing and reviewing the project and presenting their findings to a non-specialist audience.

Entry requirements

No entry criteria but MUST be taken alongside 3 full courses, either as a 4th or 5th option choice.

Your next steps...

The EPQ combines well with all other courses because it allows students to explore in depth an aspect of another A Level / BTEC subject or a topic of personal interest.

The EPQ is excellent preparation for university study and employment. Many universities and employers regard the EPQ as a clear demonstration of a student’s readiness for undergraduate study and it also demonstrates skills necessary to carry out an independent report to a high standard.

EPQ is a Level 3 qualification equivalent to an AS Level and attracts the same grades (A-E) and UCAS points as an AS Level. EPQ is run as a one-year course and is available for students in Year 12.
