Geography - A Level

in which you study two human and two physical geography topics each year. In addition you will study geographical skills such as map work, data presentation and investigation skills. You will carry out geographical fieldwork which will be assessed through the submission of an independent investigation at the end of year 13.

In year 12 you will study the following topics:

Unit 1: Physical Geography: Water and Carbon Cycles

Unit 2: Human Geography and Fieldwork Investigation: Changing Places, Contemporary Urban Environments & Geographical Skills

In year 13 you will study the following topics:

Unit 1: Physical Geography: Hazards, Coastal Systems and Landscapes

Unit 2: Human Geography: Global Systems and Global Governance

Unit 3: Independent Geographical Investigation

You will have two teachers throughout the year and you will learn through a variety of teaching styles:

- Classroom activities such as teacher presentation, discussion, note making, group work, videos, student presentations and through ICT.

- Independent work such as research, case study investigations and wider reading.

Fieldwork Opportunities

There will be an opportunity for fieldwork as part of the course with a 3 day/2 night residential in North Yorkshire in preparation for the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) which contributes 20% towards your final grade.

This course also offers an optional enrichment study visit to New York City in April 2020.

To secure a place at our Post-16 Centre you will need five or more GCSE passes at Grade 5 or above and a minimum of a Grade 4 in both English Language and Mathematics. You will also need a Grade 5 at GCSE (or equivalent vocational qualification) for most subjects you want to study at A Level.

Higher Education Geography Graduates are amongst the most sought after in the place of work. A qualification in Geography can lead to careers in Town Planning, Travel, Tourism, Media and Environmental Protection.
