Course Summary

Please note: By applying for this apprenticeship, you are expressing an interest.

You will have a conditional place on the course once you have applied directly to an employer and been successful at interview.

We would encourage you to look at a full time backup as well.

About the course

This is a one year full time work based training course.

This apprenticeship is suitable if you are looking for a career as a hairstylist or barber.

As an apprentice, you will be working in a hair salon or barbers. You will assist in the smooth running of the salon and support the stylists. You will generally spend 4 days a week at work and one day in college. A typical day in the workplace will involve welcoming the clients and general housekeeping duties. You must be willing to learn new skills and take part in training activities to enhance your learning.

The college has contacts with some hairdressing salons, but it is good if you try and find your own employer as the salons like to meet you in person. We offer a flexible approach giving you the opportunity to complete your apprenticeship in a commercial setting with Taylor & Taylor Hairdressing and Barbering School, Wigs & WarPaint Academy or City Head Spa Skills Academy instead of at college.

The day you are in college you will do some theory based work and some practical tasks. These will cover topics such as shampooing, cutting and colouring or styling and cutting men's hair and facial hair for barbering. You will also learn about setting and dressing hair for formal 'up dos' and health and safety in the workplace. Knowledge of the products you use is important, so you will learn about how to sell the products to the client as well as communicating and interacting effectively. You will have the opportunity to put these skills into practice on paying clients in the College salon.

Hairdressing apprentices will be expected to buy a uniform for the college based practical sessions and a hairdressing kit consisting of essential equipment such as, scissors, brushes, clips, practice heads etc. The estimated cost for this will be £115.

If you need to complete Functional Skills qualifications, these will be delivered in college.

What students say about this course.

"When I left school I decided to study as an apprentice as you get lots of hands on experience. It's not only cutting and styling, you have to learn customer service and engaging with different clients on a daily basis. You get experience of how a business is run day to day."

"The apprenticeship route was a really good way for me to get into a full-time job. The Sheffield College was a great place to study and fully supported me. I was delighted to be named as Hairdressing Apprentice of the Year at an awards ceremony at The City Hall."

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Throughout the course you will be assessed in the workplace to demonstrate the skills you are learning. The theory side of the course is assessed by online assessments in college. These are followed up by assessments on paying clients in the college salon.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above (or acceptable alternatives) including grade 3 in English Language.

You will also need to gain a suitable employer. You can do this through searching for vacancies on our website http://www.sheffcol.ac.uk/apprenticeship/vacancies/ and applying directly to the employer. This will be followed by a competitive interview process. Or by approaching employers yourself to ask if they will take on an apprentice. Once you find a suitable employer you should contact the college with their details.

Your next steps...

Where can it lead?

On completion of the apprenticeship you will be classed as a junior stylist working under supervision. You can progress onto a level 3 Hairdressing qualification to further develop your skills.

The majority of apprentices continue in paid employment in a salon once they complete their qualification. Previous apprentices have gained full time employment in salons such as Toni & Guy, Loaf and Capelli in Sheffield.
