Application Instructions

Students should ensure that they meet the entry requirements for the courses they are applying for (available on subject pages) as well as the overall entry requirements (5 grades at level 4 or above but must include English and Maths).

Students need to choose a minimum of three subjects to study. Please note that all of our BTEC courses are single BTEC's and equivalent to 1 A Level, you will need to choose two further subjects if choosing a BTEC course.

Course Summary

Equivalent to one A Level in size, BTEC Medical Science is suitable for students looking to develop their applied knowledge and skills in medical sciences as part of a study programme alongside two A Levels

Course Details

You will study

• Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology

• Health Issues and Scientific Reporting

• Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

Optional units:

• Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies

• Biomedical Science

• Human Reproduction and Fertility

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will receive 20hrs of classroom based lessons over a two week period.

Assessment

Units 1 and 2 are assessed externally and are worth 58% of the total marks

• Unit 1 Principles of Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology (80 marks)

• Unit 2: Health Issues and Scientific Reporting (80 marks)

Unit 3 and the optional units are all marked internally and are worth 42% of the marks

Entry requirements

  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE Biology or Grade 5-5 or above in GCSE Combined Science
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language or English Literature
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths

You need to be predicted and achieve all the grades listed above in order to undertake this subject.


Your next steps...

After studying a BTEC in Medical Science, you can pursue higher education at university for courses such as Biomedical Science, Nursing, Radiography, Physiotherapy, or Forensic Science, or you can seek employment in roles like a Laboratory Technician, Biomedical Support Worker, or as an Industry Technician.
