About this course

Students usually start at level 1 to gain the necessary skills before progressing to level 2.

This level 1 qualification covers the basic technical needs for today's motor vehicle body and paint industry. It provides essential knowledge for the body refinisher working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of workshops, dealerships and specialist paint shops. The course will cover interpreting vehicle technical information, basic vehicle preparation, vehicle refinishing materials, tools and equipment, vehicle paint application and correcting minor defects. You also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Theory lessons covering the required technology are classroom based, giving you the opportunity to take notes to aid your studies. Practical lessons take place in the motor vehicle workshops and give you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to pass the assessments. You will need to bring your own overalls and safety boots for workshop sessions; all other safety equipment will be provided. You will need to bring a pen,pencil,paper and a folder to every lesson.

You need to attend regularly and be on time for every lesson.

Functional Skills lessons also form an important part of your course.

They include English and Maths to help you improve your skills in these areas. There will be exams when you are ready. The course is approximately 50% theory and 50% practical. Your progress will be reviewed regularly in tutorial sessions

Personal Study Time

You are expected to study independently in your own time, building up your knowledge of motor vehicle body and paint technology.

You will be given passwords for our online learning materials. We have a comprehensive library for you to read suitable textbooks on the subject.

Course Details


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Knowledge is assessed using on line exams, and also by oral questioning during practical assessments. Practical assessments will be carried out in the Body Repair workshops following training and practice in the required competencies. Students will be required with assistance to build a portfolio of their work.

Entry requirements

Grade 2 in English Language and Maths or completion of a foundation certificate.
