Course Summary

Depending on your choice of campus, course enrichment activities include visits to places such as a Territorial Army base, Magistrates courts and climbing wall as well as a variety of activities including abseiling, Tae Kwondo sessions, gorge walking and activities on army physical development activity days. Residential visits offer you the chance to visit army bases and outdoor adventure activity centres. A range of public service organisations and guest speakers come into college.
Experience of work can include working with community and voluntary organisations, major incident simulations with the fire service and work supporting police training.
- Uniformed Public Services students are expected to wear a course polo shirt and appropriate clothing when at college, but especially when representing the college on visits
- You may be entitled to help from the college's Learner Support Fund with the cost of trips, visits, uniform and anything else you need to buy for your course.
Course Details
At the Sheffield College you will learn from highly qualified staff with a range of academic and public services work related backgrounds. Our students benefit from our good partnerships with the local emergency services and public sector employers.
Depending on the campus you choose to study at the excellent facilities for our uniformed public services students can include:
- Adventure training area with low ropes and obstacle course
- Climbing wall

- Emergency incident training area
- All weather sports pitch
- Gym and sports hall
- IT facilities
This course is suitable for those interested in a career in the uniformed public services. It is important that you have a positive outlook and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone by trying different activities. You should come with a reasonable level of fitness and stamina, have commitment to the course, and be able to deal with discipline. As BTEC courses are coursework - based programmes with no formal exams, excellent attendance and punctuality is a key to success.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The BTEC course is assessed by course work. Assessment methods include written assignments, worksheets, role plays, practical assessments, observations and workbooks. There are no formal exams, although you may be asked to take small tests at times to assess your understanding.
Approximately 40% of the course is practical and 60% is classroom work
Entry requirements
4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English Language
