Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship Level 3

This Advanced Level Apprenticeship covers a range of skills and duties that support a veterinary surgeon. Veterinary nursing is the care of animals receiving treatment within a veterinary practice. You will generally spend 4 days a week at work and one day in college. As a Veterinary Nurse Apprentice you will work alongside vets to provide care and treatment to a variety of animals. Your day to day work will vary and you could be administering medicine, nursing sick animals as well as cleaning cages and kennels. Part of your role could include taking phone calls and making appointments as well as dealing with customers in the veterinary practice.

You could be completing task such as husbandry skills for different species, using diagnostic imaging, assisting with preparation of materials and equipment needed for anaesthesia and supporting the anaesthetist. As an apprentice you'll work with domestic animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits and caged birds – although you could be working with horses and farm animals too.

5 GCSEs grades at 4 or above including English Language, Maths and Science, plus a placement at a training veterinary practice.

You will need to gain a suitable employer. You can do this through searching for vacancies on our website http://www.sheffcol.ac.uk/apprenticeship/vacancies/ and applying directly to the employer. This will be followed by a competitive interview process. Or by approaching employers yourself to ask if they will take on an apprentice. Once you find a suitable employer you should contact the college with their details.

You could progress be a senior veterinary nurse or vet practice manager.
