About us
King Edward VII School is the most popular Sixth Form in Sheffield with about 600 students. We have students from over forty feeder schools and 65% of the students went to other schools for their GCSEs. Students can choose from 35 courses that include both AAQs / BTECs and A Levels. It is possible to study a combination of AAQ/BTEC and A Level courses. It is a high achieving and successful school. We are a local authority School (not an academy) and are truly comprehensive with students from all ethnicities and backgrounds. It is a real privilege to work with the young adults in our Sixth Form, we hope you will consider applying.
We have a long and successful history of educating young adults. Every year over two hundred students apply to higher education. Normally around 90 students progress to Russell Group universities. We have had twenty five students progress onto Oxbridge courses in the last five years. Over 20 students who studied on the Engineering Diploma BTEC course have gained advanced apprenticeships in the last few years. Your education with us will enable you to move onto the next stage of your life.
The mix of motivated, committed and aspirational students at King Edward VII School supports success. We have experienced and enthusiastic members of staff who teach Post 16 students. They are passionate about their subjects and will share their enjoyment of their subject with you. They won’t just stick to the syllabus, expect to be challenged in your learning! They will give you the skills to evaluate evidence, make you ask questions about your understanding and help unlock the difficult concepts that you will encounter.
The school is located very near the Hallamshire Hospital and the Sheffield University campus. It is well served by bus and tram routes and is just a 15-minute walk from the city centre.
In 2025 53% of students achieved A*-B grades at A Level, with a pass rate of 98%.
Having such a large Sixth Form allows us to run a very wide range and combination of courses, some of which are not available in other schools in Sheffield. Therefore, we still offer A Level classes in subjects like Music, German, Philosophy, Textiles, Drama and Photography. King Edward VII School will work with you to create a programme of study that suits you.
Student support
King Edward VII School is very well equipped for Post 16 study. There are about sixty places in the Independent Learning Centre, fifty study spaces in the Library and a further five breakouts and IT equipped spaces dedicated for Post 16 private study. Students who wish to work in a more sociable setting can also use the dining hall and Post 16 Common Room.
We use Google Classroom and Satchel to help support your learning. These systems will help you organise your assignments and tutorial support. For those who need it, we have some IT kit to loan.
Our students told us that nearly half didn’t have access to a textbook to support their independent study. So we have invested in a textbook loan scheme so that all students can loan a text book from our Library for all of their subjects.
We have a strong Post 16 Pastoral Team of three teachers and four non-teachers working with our students. There are nearly thirty subject based sixth form only tutor groups. In Year 12 we will support you to settle in with these subject based tutorial sessions. There are activities to help you get to know the other students and mature as a learner. There are regular tutorials and assemblies to give you advice about progression and developing as a student. Transitioning from a GCSE student to an independent A Level or BTEC student is one of the most difficult challenges of Year 12. The mornings of your first half term form part of your Probationary Private Study. You will need to register and use one of the supervised private study rooms if you do not have a subject lesson in the morning. After this first half term, if you have no concerns on your review you will have passed your probationary period. You will then be able to choose where you complete private study. Some students will have an extended probationary private study period.
Your tutor will check if there are any problems with your subjects and provide support as necessary. You will be encouraged to get involved with some of the twenty or so enrichment activities including Hospital Volunteers, Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, weekly sports, music groups etc.
Before you start Year 13 you should also have done some work experience to develop workplace skills and give you some insights into possible careers. Support arranging this is provided by our Post 16 Careers staff. Towards the end of Year 12 we organise several workshops, visits, speakers and tutorials to help support you put together a convincing application for the next stage. Most students apply to university, some for apprenticeships, foundation years, employment or a Gap Year.
In Year 13 you will have developed a close relationship with your tutor so they will be able to write a flattering reference for the next step after King Edward VII School. The one-to-one mentoring and Post 18 transition sessions should support your applications. As we progress through Year 13 the focus moves onto exams and getting those top grades to support your applications.
What makes us different?
Our Sixth Form is made up of mostly incoming students from other schools. These students tend to be the most motivated and aspirational of their respective cohorts.
Experienced teachers who have a long track record of enabling students to achieve their potential. The average class size in the Sixth Form is 14 students so you will able to access that one to one support that is so important for success.
Strong pastoral support and careers guidance. 89% of our students who applied to university got a place – this suggests their applications were strong, realistic and well supported. Over twenty different enrichment activities and support with work experience placements. Strong links with Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University with over thirty students involved on the outreach schemes like Access to Sheffield.
A dedicated learning environment with excellent facilities for independent learning and a textbook for all your subjects.
Transport
The School is within 200m of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital so is well served by public transport.

Additional information
The Government recently made an announcement about the Curriculum and Assessment Review.
We are now in a position to confirm which Post 16 Applied Courses we will offer for Y12 students in September 2026.
In addition to A Levels we will be offering the following six Applied Courses:
- Applied Science AAQ - Extended Certificate or single award
- Medical Science AAQ - Extended Certificate or single award
- Business BTEC - Extended Certificate or single award
- Engineering BTEC - Foundation Diploma or 1.5 A Level equivalent, plus the engineering EPQ worth 0.5 of an A Level
- Health and Social Care AAQ - Extended Certificate or single award
- Early Childhood Development AAQ - Extended Certificate or single award
These applied courses have both coursework assignments and exams and will suit some students better than A Levels which typically just have the final exam.
Another part of the announcement was that there is free choice about the combinations of qualifications that are allowed. Students can mix and match A Levels, BTECs and AAQs to give the best combination for them. This supports student choice and is an excellent outcome.
