About us

Meadowhead Sixth Form is highly regarded throughout the city of Sheffield. In 2025, Meadowhead Sixth Formers once again achieved outstanding results, with 58% of all A Level grades awarded at A*-B and 25.6% of students achieving AAB. Impressively, the average A Level grade was a B and the average BTEC grade was a Distinction. Students also experience a first-rate curriculum offer and excellent teaching, support and extra-curricular opportunities. We also offer first-class careers opportunities through our independent careers advisor and our Meadowhead Together group which comprises our feeder primary schools, Sheffield College, both universities in Sheffield and 21 local and national business partners.

How to apply:

Our Sixth Form Open Evening will be held on Thursday 6th November 2025 from 5pm-7pm. At this event, you will be able to listen to a presentation from the Headteacher, Sixth Form Team and Sixth Form Students, and tour our fantastic school and Sixth Form facilities. Our entry requirements are five grade 4s or Level 2 Merits including Maths and an English subject. Please check the subject entry requirements carefully – they are usually a 5/6 or a Level 2 Merit for the subjects you wish to study. You will be able to submit your application from late November onwards.

New starters:

We warmly welcome students from other schools to join our Sixth Form. This year, 50 students who were not at Meadowhead in Year 11 from over 10 different schools have joined us. If you are from a Sheffield school, you should also be supported through Sheffield Progress by your form tutor. If you are a student from outside Sheffield, please contact the Sixth Form team for an application form. If your application is successful, we will contact you directly to arrange an interview.

Student support

At Meadowhead, students will receive outstanding teaching and learning. Our teaching staff are subject experts and share their enthusiasm and passion for the subject with students. For continuing Meadowhead students, they will be familiar faces who you will have known since you joined the school. We regularly meet with students and their families at information evenings.

The “jump” between GCSE and A Level is considerable but our students are helped into the Sixth Form through a dedicated programme. We hold a two-day transition event in early July in order to support students who are beginning studies at this level, and provide students with bridging work to help them prepare for their courses over the Summer.

Once part of our Sixth Form, students will benefit from support from their subject-specialist tutor, Head of Year and our Pastoral and Academic Support Managers. This provides students with tailored 1-1 support throughout their time in Sixth Form.

What makes us different:

Meadowhead Sixth Form is committed to the following values:

• Supportive – We will encourage and support you to be the best you can be. We offer friendly and helpful tutoring and regular access to a specialist careers adviser.

• Excellent – We will provide high-quality teaching and learning. Our lessons will be led by inspiring teachers who are subject specialists.

• Ambitious – We will help you widen your horizons and look further afield as you consider the next steps in your life. All students benefit from a unique enrichment        programme, extended work placements, and University visits. We also offer a bespoke support programme for students applying for Oxbridge, Medicine and Law.

• Challenging – Our courses are challenging yet rewarding. They will stretch you out of your comfort zone and ask you to work harder than ever before to ensure you reach your full potential.

• Fun – We organise a wide-range of extra-curricular activities and social events (in-school and beyond) that will help you enjoy your Sixth Form experience. Students are taught in small groups (usually 14-18 members). Students also enjoy access to well-resourced classrooms and our excellent library which they can use during non-contact time.

Ethics Curriculum:

Students benefit from a specialised ethics curriculum designed and taught by subject specialists each week. This valuable curriculum covers a variety of important and relevant issues to our students, including mental health and wellbeing, life skills, social action, consent, body image and self-esteem. It is also responsive to the ideas and views of our Student Voice.

Transport

This year, Meadowhead began running a minibus service in the morning serving students from the South-East of the city, collecting from Manor Top and Gleadless Townend. Places on the minibus are limited and staff can advise students on other transport options.

Additional information

Careers provision and enrichment:

Alongside high-quality teaching and learning in their chosen subjects, students also take part in our unique enrichment programme.

During Y12, students complete modules in the following areas:

• Work Experience (one week)

• University visit days (at least two days)

• School or Community Volunteering (at least five hours)

• Extra-curricular hobby or skill (at least ten hours)

• Independent reading and research (at least five hours)

Students will be supported through these modules during Tutor Time and Study Time.

For the work experience module, we engage with over 50 well-known local and multinational employers to provide high-quality placements in a wide variety of industry sectors: engineering & construction, sports & leisure, hospitality & catering, legal & financial, business administration and education. Visit our website for more details and links to all Trust partner websites. Students will also benefit from 1-1 sessions with our dedicated careers advisor, helping them feel confident in their next steps.

During Year 13, students will be supported in applying for university, apprenticeships or employment. As well as being incredibly beneficial for personal development, these activities also support successful applications. As part of this process, we provide mock interviews for all of our students with professionals in law, medicine and other relevant careers.

Trips, events and guest speakers:

As a Sixth Form, we are proud of our extensive range of trips and visits. Year 12 students are able to take their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

In recent years, trips and visits have included a Geography trip to Iceland, a History trip to Washington D.C., a Physics trip to CERN, Geneva, a Football Programme trip to Barcelona and a fully-funded trip to Canada for qualifying students. More local visits include to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, trips to theatres in London and Sheffield and a tour of cultural sites in Sheffield.

We hold an annual Leavers' Dinner at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel.

We work with the rest of the school to support events such as the annual Sports Day, the Everyone a Writer celebration evening and drama performances.
