About us

TRC  has been a centre of academic excellence on this site for over 500 years. We have a long and enviable tradition of providing the very best educational opportunities for the young people of this region. We firmly believe that this successful college can meet the needs of all learners across the 16-18 age range in a welcoming, supportive and safe environment. We were rated OUTSTANDING by Ofsted in 2024.

We have been recognised locally and nationally for our provision. We are the largest provider of A Level courses in the area, with over 30 subjects on offer. We also offer a range of vocational and technical pathways and sports academies. We are absolutely sure we have the right course for you.

With a student population of over 1500 (and growing) we can guarantee that our teachers are highly qualified specialists in their field, who will focus on teaching their subjects to the highest standards, with a more appropriate approach for the 16-19 year old learner - preparing you for your progression on to university or employment.  Thomas Rotherham College will be the best launch pad from school to your chosen educational or career path. Supported by a strong careers provision, our students progress to prestigious universities (including the Russell Group and Oxbridge), onto highly competitive higher education courses and into excellent careers.

We take the student experience very seriously. We are renowned for innovation, compassion and a determination to be the best we can be. We all understand the value of hard work, we care about learning, we care about each other and we know the importance of community.

Your safety, care and wellbeing is of upmost importance to us in helping you as you grow and prosper in this college. Not only will you have your own Progress Tutor, to support you as you progress during your time at your college, but you will also have access to a huge support network; including counsellors and learning mentors.

Thomas Rotherham College is a very special place. Our students benefit from a truly wonderful learning environment. Our commitment to excellence has seen us grow and develop our buildings, classrooms, learning spaces and wider educational and sporting provision.

We have incredibly strong partnerships with schools, the wider community, universities and employers. We will work with you and those partners to ensure that you have a smooth and effective transition into Thomas Rotherham College and then onto your chosen pathway, when you are ready to leave us.

We have an enormous amount going on and Thomas Rotherham College continues to be an exciting and vibrant college.

Student support

We know that while you are a sixth form student you will need support to help you reach your full potential. We can help with a range of issues including travel, transport, trips, visits, work placement and financial help.

You will also have your own Progress Tutor who you will meet regularly in whole group sessions and on an individual basis.

Throughout your time at TRC, careers information, advice and guidance is available from our Careers Department.

We also have a team offering student support, learning difficulty and disability and mental health support.

We also have a team of counsellors.

What makes us different?

TRC specialises in offering A Level and Level 3 Vocational courses and offers the widest range of Advanced Level courses in the region.

School sixth forms and College have many similarities and many differences. At college you are treated more as an adult than at a school: you do not wear a uniform; there are no bells; you call staff by their first name, there are no year 7-11s. You are registered at every individual lesson so there is no registration period. You are free to use your study time as you wish, although we will provide guidance on time management and we expect students to complete at east 4.5 hours independent learning for each of there 3 blocks outside class time.

We do not timetable in blocks so you are free to choose the subjects you wish to study giving you so much more choice!

We have some great facilities including our on-site Sports Centre, Lecture Theatre, Music Rooms, 2 storey Learning Resources Centre, Drama Studio and masses of outdoor space including a full size artificial pitch.

Transport

TRC is situated on Moorgate Road in Rotherham and is easily accessible via excellent public transport links.

The College also provides its own College bus services.  Please see the website for details and route information.
