Sheffield High School
We’d like to extend a warm welcome to the Sheffield High School Sixth Form. You’ve reached an exciting crossroads in your school life where, for the first time, you’ll have the chance to fully dictate the path you wish to follow. This brings with it challenges, opportunities, excitement and expectations. In choosing to join the Sixth Form at Sheffield High School, you can be confident that academic excellence and securing and sustaining high academic outcomes are at the heart of school life. However, life in the Sixth Form at SHS is about more than simple academic success. We support the development of confident, well-rounded and independent-minded young people. The Sixth Form will provide you with new freedoms and new responsibilities, as well as the opportunity to take a leading role in the school whilst guiding you in the next step in your careers – be that university, employment or on to a gap year. As a member of the Sixth Form at SHS you can be confident that you are surrounded by a supportive, friendly pastoral team who wish to see you succeed and who will support you in each step over the next two years. As you enter the Sixth Form, you will already have developed a strong sense of what you want to achieve academically and personally. As well as maintaining high academic standards, we will support you in making the most of the wide range of extra-curricular opportunities on offer. The Sixth Form is a chance to continue existing interests and develop new ones. We will also provide you with the opportunity to act as role models for the younger pupils. This may be as a prefect, by running a club or simply through a positive, mature approach to school life. The Sixth Form at Sheffield High School encourages you to take responsibility, individually and as a group, for managing your experience in the Sixth Form. In return you will find us strong advocates for ensuring that your voice is heard across the School! Finally, we hope you will have fun and enjoy the experience of being a member of the Sixth form. The best way to get a feel for life in the Sixth Form is to come and visit us, and take the opportunity to come to talk to staff and students about life in the Sixth Form at SHS. We are always keen to welcome you and answer questions! The easiest way to do this is at our Open Morning held on Saturday 12th November! Alternatively you can ring for a personal appointment when a senior member of our staff will be delighted to show you around the Sixth Form and to resolve all your queries. We have a number of scholarships, awarded on academic merit, and means-tested bursaries available for applicants to the Senior School and Sixth Form which can mean that fees are substantially reduced or completely covered. Please visit our website onwww.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk for more information on the school and our application procedure. If you decide to apply initially through Apply Sheffield we will send you our own application form with the opportunity for you to indicate an interest in our our scholoarships and bursaries. We look forward to meeting you and wish you all the very best for the next two years.
Whatever your aspirations, goals or dreams for the future might be, life in the Sixth Form at SHS is designed to prepare you to take that next step. You will be supported by an experienced personal tutor who will be able to offer guidance and support as you research, plan and prepare for your future. All our sixth form students have a tutor with whom they have regular timetabled contact. Tutors help them to review their overall progress and to prepare for university entry. As you think about entering the Sixth form you will already have developed a strong sense of what you want to achieve academically and personally. In joining us at SHS you can be confident that you will be surrounded by a supportive, friendly pastoral team that wish to see you succeed and will support you in each step of the next two years. All of our students benefit from enrolment with the Independent Schools Careers Organisation (ISCO), which offers individual careers advice and guidance that is consolidated and supported in school by our first class Careers Department. Furthermore, as a member of the Girls Day School Trust you will enjoy membership of the Minerva Network. This is a unique Alumni association, which boasts nearly 50,000 members, and provides students with unrivalled opportunities to make career and social connections across the UK that will last a life time. Our students also benefit from the opportunity to access a wide range of voluntary and work experience placements with local businesses and charitable organisations. All the students who choose to do so go on to Higher Education and every year approximately 15% choose to apply for Oxford or Cambridge. Some students like to take a gap year between school and university and our careers staff can advise on this.
What makes us different?
Sheffield High School offers a unique Sixth Form experience that combines academic excellence with a wide curriculum choice for students, strong pastoral support from an experienced tutor team and a varied enrichment programme. As a member of the Sixth Form at SHS you will enjoy the freedom and independence that goes hand-in–hand with your new status as a student. Moreover, as part of a larger school community you will also enjoy a wide range of opportunities for leadership, from acting as a prefect to undertaking a role as a House Captain, Sports Captain or classroom assistant in our Junior School. Sheffield High School offers a varied, challenging and exciting curriculum for our Sixth Form students. Most students study 4 AS subjects in Y12, followed by 3 A2 subjects in Y13. There is also the opportunity to study 5 subjects at AS following consultation with staff in school. Advice about subject combinations is always available from the Sixth Form tutorial team. We also offer students in the Sixth Form the opportunity to study for the AQA Baccalaureate. This is an academic qualification that builds on your core A-level subjects by adding value through wider learning and enrichment activities. To achieve the qualification you need to study at least 3 subjects to A2 level and an AS in either General Studies or Critical Thinking. You must also complete an Extended Project and participate in enrichment activities. By completing the AQA Baccalaureate you will show that you have developed your personal qualities and skills to the full. For example, it will show that you are resourceful, imaginative, can use your own initiative and can work independently or with others.
The breakdown of our results shows that, in the school’s unrivalled sixth year of a 100% pass rate, 83% of our students achieved grades A* to B, with 55% of them at grades A* or A. This means that almost everyone gets a place at her first choice university. In 2011, 11 girls went to Oxford and Cambridge across a range of subject areas and 15 were accepted onto either medical, dentistry or veterinary science courses. The girls at Sheffield High continue to buck the national trend, with large numbers of them achieving outstanding results in Maths, Further Maths and the Sciences, with Biology and Chemistry being the most popular choice for our sixth form students. All our Oxbridge candidates have secured places to study a wide range of subjects.
