About us

Wanting to combine your passion for football with a career in the sports industry? The Sheffield United Football & Education Academy provides an opportunity to gain an industry-recognised Sports Qualification while being affiliated to your local professional football club.

The Football & Education Academy delivers bespoke further and higher education/training qualifications. Our aim is to provide a high-quality and alternative education provision for young people and adults who want to pursue a career in the sports industry. Our learners thrive in a professional learning environment where we offer high level teaching and learning, outstanding work experience opportunities, football and academia progression pathways and a stimulating enrichment programme where learners can also represent their club on the pitch. Regardless of background and ability, we help all our learners to achieve their potential through our top-class education and football programmes.

The Football & Education Academy provides a high quality education and training environment specialising in the delivery of accredited sports based qualifications in both further and higher education. Delivered across a variety of state-of-the-art sites throughout Sheffield, by qualified teaching staff and coaches, our sport focused courses offers both talented and recreational young football players the opportunity to study whilst actively participating in a football development programme. Our new contemporary vocational qualification have been re-designed in conjunction with feedback from employers and industry experts, in order to help the students develop the skills and qualities that are required to work within sport. A core focus of the qualifications are to provide practical work-experience opportunities to the students, allowing them to develop the necessary skills needed for direct employment within the industry. This is underpinned by a broad range of academic skills and knowledge, that allows learners to take their first steps within the diverse and ever-changing sporting environment.

Student support

Here at Sheffield United Community Foundation we pride ourselves on the wrap around care available to all of our students. Our aim is to develop students in all aspects of their lives and not just their academic ability. Students leave our courses as better people, not just better students.

At our Football & Education Academy each student will have access to a qualified teacher, personal learning mentor, teaching assistant, UEFA B Coach, physio, performance analyst and S&C coach. Overseeing the operations is a Curriculum leader & Head of Football Recruitment who work closely with the Education Manager. We believe the above provides an incredible staff to student ratio in order to provide the students with an elite level experience across their academic, personal and sporting progress. All Students will have a dedicated learning mentor and work placement coordinator who will help to enhance their CV and career once the course is completed. Furthermore, we will arrange for guest speakers from a huge variety of roles within the sporting industry in order to provide the very best careers guidance whether that be tailored towards university or pursuing your playing ambitions.

In addition to this, all of our student have access to additional financial, learning, well-being and personal support that is made available through our affiliated course provides; Sheffield College and the League Football Trust.

"At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies. Free meals If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items. Travel passes Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire. You can apply for a student pass at or purchase a value pass from us at reception, including a college specific product for all ages. Learner Support Fund If you are enrolled with us, you may receive support towards the cost of: — Travel — Books and materials — Uniform and equipment — Essential course trips — NUS extra — DBS checks needed for your course (previously known as CRB) — UCAS registration fee and travel to interviews when applying for university."

Sheffield United Community Foundation is Sheffield United's charitable arms and offers education in association with The Sheffield College and The English Football League Trust. What you do and what you achieve at Sheffield United Community Foundation will hopefully have a positive impact on the rest of your life, so please make the most of the opportunities available. We will help you do that by providing you with passionate and excellent teaching, facilities and support.

Our courses are currently delivered across three purposely selected sites including; Norton, Handsworth FC and Bramall Lane. Lessons, tutorials and workshops will be delivered on-site within our newly designed learning hubs. The Football programme will utilise excellent sporting facilities which include fully equipped fitness suites, 4G outdoor pitches and changing rooms. The student’s bespoke timetables combine their academic and practical study with work experience, tutorials sessions, work experience, as well as the football training and match programmes.

You will learn from highly qualified staff with a range of academic and sport specific backgrounds within sport science, health, coaching, and fitness industries. Students will benefit from a broader range of local, regional and national connections available through the community foundations associated partners. We offer a very stimulating curriculum to all of our learners. As part of the learning environment we offer state of the art ICT equipped classrooms as well as embed practical sessions, trips, and visits. In addition, we offer professional guest speakers such as first team players and staff, as well as utilise modern technology by offering each learner their own personal virtual classroom. During your study you will have numerous opportunities to undertake additional vocational awards and workshops designed to help facilitate your personal and professional development. This includes coaching and fitness qualifications, tutorial sessions, NCS, employability and progress events.

We not only provide high quality education but also work extremely hard to allow our learners the possibility of achieving their future goals. We’ll give you hands on experience that will make your CV stand out from the pile, the confidence to shine in an interview and the ability to handle yourself when you start at work. This is all part of our comprehensive 'tutorial and progress' programme which students will undertake and complete in addition to their core sporting qualification. 

To motivate and inspire our students, we have clear guidelines and boundaries that include a positive behaviour policy. This encourages students to reach their goals and are rewarded for doing so. Students can earn a place in Team of the Month by excelling in the following areas: Attendance, Punctuality, Work rate, Meeting deadlines, outstanding contributions. These awards are handed out weekly, and the Student of the Month has their full size FIFA card presented by an SUFC first team player. At the end of each term, the students who are top in our ' Positive Behaviour League' will be rewarded with an all expenses paid trip. Previous trips have included tours of Old Trafford, Manchester City tickets, Alton Towers etc. Students can also win ‘Learner of the term’ with the LFE who will provide the student with a £40 Amazon Voucher.

Away from the classroom, our students get the opportunity to represent Sheffield United Community Foundation In one of our many colleges football teams. These teams are tiered allowing each student to compete in an environment that matches their current technical ability and sporting ambitions. For those who compete for recreational enjoyment our enrichment programme allows for a pressure-free break from traditional classroom studies. Alternatively, our elite football programme closely replicate the academy apprenticeship model, allowing aspiring young footballers the chance to showcase and develop their potential. Having links with local semi-professional and professional men's teams create opportunities and pathways both on and off the pitch.

Since 2018 Sheffield United Community Foundation Education department has seen an increase in student numbers of nearly 200%. We believe this is due to offering a programme like no other within Yorkshire. In 2019/20 all graduating students left with offers from University, and our Women’s Football & Education students were offered unconditional places. 100% of our Men’s Football & Education students completed the course on target grade and 75% achieved above their target grades.
