About us

Tapton Sixth Form is an inspiring, challenging and dynamic environment in which to take your A Levels. We know that this time in a young person’s life is pivotal in shaping their future direction and all students are provided with personalised guidance about appropriate subject choice and their likely post-18 destinations to make sure they are best placed for future success. Throughout their time at Tapton, students experience outstanding teaching and learning from staff who aim to inspire them in the classroom and to prepare them for their A-level examinations. All students are allocated to an experienced form tutor who provides them with academic and pastoral support on a daily basis for the two years of Sixth Form study, backed up by an extensive and effective Sixth Form Team. At Tapton we are proud of the diversity of our students – we have students from a wide variety of educational and social backgrounds. We strive to create a cohesive and inclusive environment, run by a team of dedicated teachers and support staff. A student’s full timetable is balanced by recreational activities like ‘Pop-Up’ Sports and charity events, alongside opportunities to attend lectures on political issues, science, mathematics and beyond. Tapton’s strong links with local and national universities mean that our students receive exceptional support as they apply for Higher Education and begin the transition to university life. Well over 90% of our students successfully apply to university, with many gaining admission into the most competitive institutions in the country. We are keen to support our students whatever their chosen direction post-18, such as apprenticeships or employment. Our aim is to help all our Sixth Formers to lay the foundations of their successful future lives. There are two ways to apply to our Sixth Form, and it depends on where you are studying for Y11 that makes this choice for you. Schools within Sheffield generally use Sheffield Progress which is an online application form and your school will have a co-ordinator (usually a teacher or careers advisor) who will help you through this. If you live outside of Sheffield, or attend a private school, you will complete a paper application form. All our applications go through Sheffield City Council, and we follow their admissions policy. When applying to us there are several things you need to consider. If an application doesn’t work because of the grades you are predicted or the subject combination you have chosen, we will contact you through UCAS progress or email, so please make sure you check these for messages. This will give you a chance to make your application work.

Student support

When you join us, our specialist team of tutors will help you to settle in quickly. Whether you are from Tapton School or elsewhere, there are new people to meet and new approaches to learn. You will be assigned a personal tutor who meets with you each morning, helping you adjust to new expectations and explore issues like time management, study skills and career choice. The Leadership Team, Head of Sixth Form, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Year Manager and Personal Tutors all work with teaching staff to support you during your time with us. Students receive expert guidance throughout their Sixth Form career. They are advised on subject choice during Year 11 to ensure their course matches their goals, and during Year 12 they are entered for AS exams. Post-18 planning begins towards the end of Year 12, and decisions about Year 13 also need careful consideration. It is wonderful that our students achieve good grades and go on to exciting futures. Alongside what is learnt in the classroom, we endeavour to support our students and teach them about life outside of school, to give them a broad and fulfilling experience whilst with us. Students fully engage in our Charity Week and raise money for local and national charities throughout the year, as well as raising awareness of topical and current issues, responding to events in our world. We are working with a self defence organisation to develop a programme aimed at young people leaving home. We offer the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, as well as the opportunity to be a part of the School Theatre Company, music ensembles, and sports teams. In the past our Sixth Formers have successfully supported many of our younger students through our Paired Reading scheme and classroom support. Volunteering and work experience is on offer for all students, as well as the opportunity to engage in outreach schemes with Higher Education institutions. Tapton School is an IRIS school (Institute for Research in Schools), providing students with the chance to take part in cutting edge scientific research projects. Alongside this we have our Science and Humanities lectures, Science Journal Club, Engineering club. There is plenty to choose from!

What makes us different?

High Expectations and aspirations to excellence are hallmarks of Tapton's approach. Success at this level requires students to take more responsibility. You are expected to work hard and respond maturely in a more adult working environment. This sets our Sixth Form apart and creates a lively and exciting atmosphere.

The Sixth Form area, with common room, outdoor terrace and cafe, forms the focus of daily life. This was renovated in 2016 and is a modern and airy space. All subject departments have modern, comfortable teaching spaces and are well equipped, with access to interactive whiteboards and computers for individual student use. This supports our well-established intranet and Virtual Learning Environment. Completed in 2001, our building comprises outstanding specialist facilities in science, art, technology, drama, music and ICT. Our sports hall, gym and all-weather games pitch are state-of-the-art and the large library is well resourced and staffed.
