Course Summary

A Level Further Maths is designed for students who enjoy mathematics and want to explore the subject in greater depth. It builds on the knowledge and skills gained in A Level Maths, introducing more advanced concepts and methods that are essential for fields such as engineering, physics, computer science, economics, and mathematics itself.

The course covers a range of topics including complex numbers, matrices, differential equations, advanced calculus, and mechanics. Students develop problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to approach unfamiliar challenges with confidence.


Course Details

Complex Numbers – arithmetic and geometry of complex numbers.

Matrices – operations, inverses, determinants, and applications to systems of equations.

Further Algebra & Functions – polynomials, rational functions, sequences, series, and transformations.

Vectors – 3D vectors, scalar and vector products, lines and planes.

Proof and Reasoning – formal proofs and logical arguments.

Further Calculus – differentiation, integration, and differential equations.

Further Mechanics – advanced motion, forces, moments, and Newtonian mechanics.

Further Statistics – probability distributions, hypothesis testing, and correlation/regression.

Decision Mathematics – algorithms, graph theory, linear programming, and networks.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Further mathematics is a fully exam-assessed course.

The final exams comprise of 4 papers:

• Core pure 1 – 1.5 hours

• Core pure 2 – 1.5 hours

• Decision Maths 1 – 1.5 hours

• Further Mechanics 1 – 1.5 hours


Entry requirements

Must be studying A Level Maths and must have gained a grade 7 in GCSE Maths.
