Course Summary
This course covers the history and development of recording technology. You will learn practical skills for recordings and compositions including the usage of modern recording and production techniques, including the function of a digital audio workstation (DAW).
Course Details
You will learn to capture, mix, master, manipulate, create, edit and refine audio and MIDI data. You will examine the principles of sound and audio technology and apply this practically.
The course is taught in dedicated rooms with access to recording technology and DAWs with both industry standard software and hardware. There is a significant practical element to the course, and you will be required to set up and undertake recording sessions in addition to inputting and working with MIDI and virtual instruments.
In studying this course, you will learn the skills required to operate a recording studio and create your own musical compositions. Please note that this course combines both a theoretical and practical element.
You do not specifically need instrumental skills, though there is a substantial compositional element that benefits having some prior musical knowledge.
Study Visits
Study visits and visiting speakers are planned across the department. You will get the chance to perform in and provide technical support for departmental productions too if you want to develop your CV and technical skills further.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Assessment will be a mixture of external exam (60%) and a portfolio of practical work (40%). The portfolio of practical work will involve separate recording and technology-based compositions.
