Course Summary
The Physics A Level course build upon the student’s knowledge and understanding gained during GCSE studies in Physics. Both years are divided into modules but are assessed at the end of the respective courses.
In year 12 students study five compulsory units covering a range of physical principles and practical skills. There are an additional 4 compulsory units and an optional block in Year 13 that utilises our departmental specialism, Astrophysics.
Course Details
Year 12
Unit 1 Measurements and their errors
Unit 2 Particles and radiation
Unit 3 Waves
Unit 4 Mechanics and energy
Unit 5 Electricity
Year 13
Unit 6 Further mechanics
Unit 7 Thermal physics
Unit 8 Fields
Unit 9 Nuclear physics
Unit 10 Optional module - Astrophysics
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The A Level course is assessed in three 2 hour examinations. Paper one assesses Year 12 content (units 2-5) and unit 6; paper 2 comprises unit 7-9 (but assumes knowledge from 2-5); paper three covers practical and date analysis skills from unit 1 and the Astrophysics unit. The A Level course itself contains twelve required practical activities which are assessed in the exams and result in a separate "Practical Endorsement" as evidence of the skills students have required.
Entry requirements
GCSE grade 6 in Physics or 6 and 6 in Combined Award Science and GCSE grade 6 in Mathematics
Your next steps...
