Course Details

A Level Biology at Mercia Collegiate Sixth Form is designed to be stimulating, enjoyable, and challenging with opportunities to develop practical skills and learn about exciting developments in Biology such as genetic engineering and disease prevention.

The A Level Biology course builds upon the key principles introduced in GCSE Biology. Teachers lead from the front, regularly questioning scholars on their existing Biology knowledge before building a deeper understanding through clear explanations and modelled examples. Scholars will need to remember and apply a large amount of information; teachers will help them to achieve this through drilling on key facts and further application in practical opportunities.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Exam Board: AQA A Level Biology delves deep into an array of fascinating subjects. These include: • Biological molecules • Cells • The immune system • Exchange and transport systems • DNA, RNA and protein synthesis • Diversity, classification, and variation • Photosynthesis and respiration • Energy transfer and nutrient cycles • Stimuli and responses • Nervous coordination • Homeostasis • Genetics and evolution • Ecosystems The course is assessed through three written exams. These assess all areas of the course including practical skills through multiple choice, short, and long answer questions, comprehension questions, critical analysis of data and extended response.

Entry requirements

A grade 7 in Biology GCSE or at least a Grade 7,7 in Combined Science is required

We welcome applications for A Level Biology from those who have not studied separate sciences, known as triple science, at GCSE level. Your next steps...

Biology complements the study of the other science subjects, particularly Chemistry as knowledge of chemical concepts will support pupils understanding of topics such as genetics.

A Level Biologists will need to be competent in Mathematics, as they need to be able to interpret data in tables and graphs as well as carry out statistical analysis. For those interested in fields of study relating to the environment, Biology and Geography are an ideal combination. The subject is also ideal for those studying Psychology.

A Level Biology is also commonly chosen by scholars who have selected English, History, or Languages to widen their career options.
