Course Summary
English Literature is an incredibly popular A Level. As a subject to pursue, or as a complement to other subjects, English Literature develops analytical and communication skills and encourages a thoughtfulness that can extend well beyond the subject. Immersion in literature enables pupils to pursue their passions and interests whilst also achieving high level academia in a facilitating subject.
Course Details
Studying English Literature at Mercia could lead to a number of varied careers; essential to a career in Law, the Arts or publishing. This subject is highly regarded by the top universities globally. English Literature at Russell Group universities is highly competitive. It is often the case that grades alone are not enough. At Mercia School we will seek to advance scholars beyond the course itself. Pupils will read widely and extensively both with us and independently. Furthermore, pupils will be developed as future scholars and ambassadors for the subject.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Exam Board: AQA
English Literature Specification B
The course has three main components: aspects of tragedy, crime writing or political and social protest writing. Scholars will explore texts linked through literary genre that cover a range of historical and literary periods. The course is assessed with four examinations, with three lasting two hours and thirty minutes, and one lasting three hours. Additionally, scholars will submit two essays that will be assessed by teachers and moderated by AQA

At least a grade 7 at GCSE in English

Scholars can study English Literature with any subject they enjoy, although studying English Literature will support those studying for other literacy-based subjects such as History and Religious Studies. An ideal foundation for those pursuing law, English scholars are seen to be thorough researchers with an analytical mind.
